This heavy-hitting rock band from California came out swinging (guitars) on a Monday night in Indianapolis. Despite being less than a week before “The End Is Not The End” album release, and on the starting night of their tour alongside Sevendust, this seasoned band showed no nerves to the enthusiastic crowd. Pushing harder into the heavy vocals and intense guitars, the new album resurges the bands’ activity and growth within the scene.
Opening with the title track from their new album, Atreyu presents a soft intro with a thought-provoking and emotional melody. The band is quite skilled at bouncing between a slower paced, heart-wrenching song and a heavy, bold crowd moving one. The crowd follows along, never skipping a beat as they lock in to the band. A few songs later the fans, flecked in rock and metal merch, catch on to “The Time Is Now” with ease, the chords quick to learn and irresistible not to sing once picked up.
Once again they slow down and give the crowd a chance to catch their breath following some popular throwbacks. Atreyu covers Audioslave’s “Like a Stone”, sending chills down my spine and goosebumps up my skin. The crowd is right there with Brandon, an anonymous choir accompanying the infamous song. Following the song, stillness and awe filled the room. Switching right back to high energy, they move on to “Ego Death” - a much more fun and playful sound.
Members of the band give it their all while sprinkling glimpses of their personality on stage. Bouncing around with his bright red guitar, Dan stays energetic and eye-catching. Travis partially ate and subsequently threw a few baked goods (muffin? donut?) to the crowd between songs. Marc manages to move around the stage while playing bass and returning to his mic to add in the heavy vocals in perfect time. Kyle stays focused, centered on stage on the drums. Brandon engages with the crowd, keeping hold of their attention throughout the set. All in all, Atreyu is definitely an entertaining and quite fun band to see live.
